“The conferences are a good chance to meet others involved with legal plans, learn what is currently happening in the industry, meet administrators who may have work to refer and to have fun!”
- Andrew Kohn, Hyatt Legal Plans

What benefits will you gain from this conference?

  • Networking with other legal plan professionals, including legal plan administrators from around the country, and trustees.

  • CLE credits available

  • Learn about the current trends from professionals in the field, i.e. marketing, technology, security courses catering to those new to the field, legal plan veterans, trustees and administrators.

  • Visit with our exhibitors - legal plan administrators and vendors that appeal to your law office practice

  • Visit great cities throughout the United States and participate in great off-site family friendly events!

Who should come and why...

  • If you are a veteran API conference regular, you already know of the great program and networking opportunities that are in store for you. That’s why you keep coming back every year!
  • If you are new to legal plans – either a lawyer, marketer or an insurance or HR professional, we have the basic sessions you need to get started, plus a raft of experts floating around for you to talk to. Keep in mind that most of the industry veterans you will meet started out as first time attendees to an API conference!
  • For plan administrators, we have sessions this year on the employee benefit plan marketplace, expanding benefits with a limited budget, technology and provider relations. Plus plenty of networking opportunity for you to meet new providers.
  • For legal plan providers, we have some new substantive sessions on the new bankruptcy act, SCRA cases, advance directives, medicaid asset protection and consumer finance matters, as well as sessions on financial management issues and computer system security.
  • For legal plan trustees, we have our annual ERISA fiduciary responsibility legal update, plus some special sessions on structuring benefits with limited resources and treatment of fund expenses presented by a DOL representative.

Also offered are CLE-accredited educational sessions and planned special networking events. When you combine them with an opportunity to visit the sights and attractions of New Orleans , you will see that attending this year's event will be well worth your time and money.

2009 API Conference -
New Orleans

Even with the challenging economic environment, the API Conference was a success, and we would like to thank all those who attended! The host city of New Orleans pulled out the red carpet for our group this year, providing everyone with amazing culinary opportunities, picture-perfect weather and a general hospitality that can only be found in the Crescent City!

The substantive sessions were varied, and covered all aspects of the legal services industry, including sessions on blogging, ethics, ERISA and general legal services updates, and much more. With a shorter format this year (one day less), it was less time out of the office and money saved, but still offering the same amount of CLE opportunities for the attendees. New to the conference this year were the exhibitors. With this being so well received, this is a opportunity that the API plans to continue. So if your company is interested in participating next year, please let us know!

The API would like to send out a very special farewell to ABA Standing Committee Members, Pamela Stevenson, Luis Cabassa and Robert Ostertag, API Board Members, David Baker, John Wachsmann and Dan McDuffie and last but not least, Joan Beranbaum, the former API President. Everyone gave the API their all, and we can’t say thank you enough!

In addition to the educational portion of the conference, there was fun to be had every night! We’re happy to say that the Friday night event was sold out! It began with dinner at the Court of Two Sisters Restaurant which was exquisite, then flowing into a Haunted History Tour that led the groups around the French Quarter - spooky to say the least!

Rounding out the event was then Beacon of Hope Service Project that brought 11 API Conference attendees (and three family members) together to give back to local community. The project took everyone out into, the still, damaged Lakeview area, one of the hardest hit neighborhoods during Hurricane Katrina. At Hope United Church, the group painted, in sweltering heat, the inside walls of a gymnasium that will eventually serve the neighborhood community. Thank you doesn’t even begin to express our sincerity to this group - giving a little goes a long way!

The API Community Service Project

When visiting our host city, we like to give something back in return for it's hospitality. This year took us to Hope United Church where 14 API volunteers painted gym that was destroyed by Hurricane Kartina. The 100 degree temps. didn't kill anyone's enthusiasm - we got the project done within our three hour time limited and left a little goodwill behind in the Big Easy! Thanks to all our hardworking volunteers!
